Twenty Selected for 2004 AK Steel Scholarships

 

Middletown, OH, May 21, 2004—AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) today announced that twenty sons and daughters of AK Steel employees have been selected to receive the company’s 2004 college scholarship awards. The awards, valued at $16,000 each, are funded by the AK Steel Foundation. Winners of AK Steel scholarships are selected by an independent academic panel based solely upon academic merit and non-academic achievements.

 “AK Steel is proud to continue its longstanding support of higher education by presenting college scholarship awards to this talented group of young people,” said James L. Wainscott, president and chief executive officer of AK Steel. “My congratulations go to these outstanding students who have not only excelled academically, but also served their schools and communities.”

Recipients of 2004 AK Steel Scholarships are:

Rebecca Bailey, daughter of Christopher and Mary Margaret Bailey of Middletown, Ohio. Rebecca is graduating from Bishop Fenwick High School where she has been active in student council, yearbook, basketball and the Spanish, Mission and Pep clubs. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received numerous academic awards. She volunteers at Middletown Regional Hospital, tutors elementary students and has been involved in a number of other community activities. Mary Bailey works in the sales and customer service department at the corporate office.

Kathleen Batliner, daughter of Carl and Jennifer Batliner of Middletown, Ohio. Kathleen graduates from Middletown High School where she participated in student government, swimming, cross country, track, spirit squad and the French club. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society and has received a number of academic awards. She has volunteered for Special Olympics, Sans Souci charitable sorority, All-American Weekend, Young Life and other church activities. Carl Batliner works in the environmental affairs department at the corporate office.

Douglas BeCraft, son of Terrance and Rosemary BeCraft of West Chester, Ohio. Douglas graduates from Archbishop Moeller High School where he has been active in the golf, tennis and academic teams, Junior Engineering and Technology Society and student government. He has received the National Merit Letter of Commendation as well as a number of other academic awards. He has volunteered for Big Brothers, Ronald McDonald House, Meals on Wheels and as a mentor for elementary school students. Terry BeCraft works in the sales and customer service department at the corporate office.

William Brumfield, son of William J. Brumfield and Linda Shepherd, both of Middletown, Ohio, and the stepson of Douglas Shepherd of Middletown. William graduates from Madison Junior-Senior High School where he participated in football, baseball, basketball, Youth Alive, Spanish club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A member of National Honor Society, he has received a number of academic awards.  He has volunteered for Middletown Regional Hospital, Friends of Franklin Christmas, YMCA and as a tutor for elementary school students. Douglas Shepherd works in the electrical construction department at Middletown Works. 

Julie Guiler, daughter of Robert and Linda Guiler of Zanesville, Ohio. Julie graduates from Maysville High School where she has been active in the Spanish, Key, Varsity M and Pep clubs, along with the basketball, volleyball and cross country teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received a number of academic honors. She has volunteered in Service Learning, her church youth group, Salvation Army, at an animal shelter and as a camp counselor and teacher’s aid. Robert Guiler works in the quality department at Zanesville Works.

Taylor Hammond, daughter of R. Steven and Molly Hammond of Coshocton, Ohio. Taylor graduates from Coshocton High School where she has been active in student council, Key and Art clubs, the Coshocton Youth Foundation, soccer, swimming and track. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received a number of academic awards. She has volunteered for Salvation Army, Red Cross, Family Reading Night, as a tutor for elementary students, and as a referee for youth soccer. Steven Hammond works in the finishing department at Coshocton Works.

Joanna Hartsock, daughter of Larry and Jane Hartsock of Coshocton, Ohio. Joanna graduates from River View High School where she has been active in softball, cross country, basketball, band and the Letterman’s club. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is the recipient of a number of academic awards. She has been active in 4-H and as a Bible School teacher, and she volunteers for numerous communities activities including Relay for Life, litter pick-up, landscaping for River View Bear’s Den and others. Larry Hartsock works in the cold rolling department at Coshocton Works.

Kimberly Lange, daughter of Thomas and Peggy Lange of Trenton, Ohio. Kimberly graduates from Edgewood High School where she has been involved in student council, yearbook, volleyball, basketball and softball. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society and has received a number of academic awards. She has been active in 4-H and her church youth group and she has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, the Cincinnati Zoo and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Thomas Lange works in the electrical maintenance and control department at Middletown Works.

Jacqueline Macy, daughter of Jack and Lisa Macy of Middletown, Ohio. Jacqueline graduates from Madison Junior-Senior High School where she has been active in softball, volleyball, Spanish club, Youth Alive and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a National Honor Society member and has received a number of academic awards. She has volunteered for various sports camps, Feed the Hungry, Junior Olympic Softball, Relay for Life and other organizations. Lisa Macy works for Northwestern National Insurance Company, a subsidiary of AK Steel, in Middletown.

Matthew Margolis, son of Linda Margolis and the late Robert Margolis of Middletown, Ohio. Matthew graduates from Middletown High School where he participated in football, basketball, Chess and Math clubs and Explorers. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society and has received a number of academic awards. He has volunteered for Hospice of Middletown, Middfest, All-American Weekend and Hope House. Linda Margolis works in the finance department at the corporate office.

Stephen Pichler, son of William and Deborah Pichler of Butler, Pennsylvania. Stephen graduates from Butler Area Senior High School where he has been active in student council, tennis, marching and symphonic bands, equations team and the Spanish and Yearbook clubs. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was selected to attend the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Health Care. He has also received a number of other academic awards. He has volunteered for Special Olympics, the Butler Symphony, Caring Angels and United Way. William Pichler works in the melt shop maintenance department at Butler Works.

Diane Ricciardella, daughter of Kenneth and Karen Ricciardella of Butler, Pennsylvania. Diane graduates from Butler Area Senior High School where she has been involved in lacrosse, marching band, Junior Classical League and Latin club. She is a member of National Honor Society and has received a number of academic awards. She has volunteered for Caring Angels, Lifesteps, the Butler Symphony, Rotary club and the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation. Kenneth Ricciardella works in the silicon department at Butler Works.

Justin Rigling, son of Gregory and Marcia Rigling of Hamilton, Ohio. Justin graduates from St. Xavier High School where he has been active in Theater Xavier, Science Olympiad, JETS engineering competition and the Robotics, Math and Photography clubs. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has received numerous academic awards. He serves as a math and writing tutor and as a Eucharistic Minister at his church. He has volunteered for housing rehab and mission food drive activities. Gregory Rigling works in the steelmaking department at Middletown Works.

Abigail Schmidt, daughter of William and Kathleen Schmidt of Butler, Pennsylvania. Abigail graduates from Butler Area Senior High School where she has been active in student council, soccer, lacrosse, Spanish club and as a peer mediator. She is a member of the National Honor Society and received a number of academic awards. She serves as a student advisor to the Butler Area School Board and the Middle States Planning Committee. She has volunteered for the Visiting Nurses Association, Western Pennsylvania Hospice and a personal care home. William Schmidt works at the hot strip mill at Butler Works.

Joshua Shulman, son of Jay and Dr. Karen Shulman of Allison Park, Pennsylvania. Joshua graduates from Hampton High School where he has been active in football, wrestling, track and marching and symphonic bands. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Honors Society and has earned various academic honors. He has volunteered for the St. Vincent DePaul Society, road cleanup and blood drive projects, and the “Adopt-a-Platoon” project writing letters to soldiers in Iraq. Jay Shulman works in the information technology department at Butler Works.

Matthew Siedlecki, son of George and Lynn Siedlecki of Perrysburg, Ohio. Matthew graduates from Central Catholic High School where he has participated in football, baseball, basketball, Spanish club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is a member of National Honor Society and received a number of academic awards. He has volunteered for the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, Children’s Miracle Network and CYO baseball camp and he participated in the Positive Choices program. George Siedlecki works in administration at AK Tube LLC, a subsidiary of AK Steel, in Walbridge, Ohio.

Austin Stockard, son of Alan and Michele Stockard of Butler, Pennsylvania. Austin graduates from Butler Area Senior High School where he has been active in marching band, student council, school plays, German and Thespian clubs, Youth Leadership Foundation and Students Against Destructive Decisions. He has traveled to a number of countries as part of the People to People Student Ambassador program. He is a member of the Pennsylvania State Police Explorer’s program and has been active in his church youth group and various other church activities. Alan Stockard works in the labor services department at Butler Works.

Janell Strouse, daughter of John and Diane Strouse of Coshocton, Ohio. Janell graduates from River View High School where she has been active in the Ohio Model United Nations program, school musicals, choir, Passport to Education program, Junior Achievement and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She is a member of National Honor Society and has received a number of academic honors. She volunteers at her church, 4-H, the Ohio Leadership Institute camp, Cystic Fibrosis and the American Cancer Society. Diane Strouse works in the sales department at Coshocton Works.

William Woodward, son of William M. and Theresa Woodward of Monroe, Ohio. William graduates from Lemon-Monroe High School where he has been active in Thespians, marching band, academic quiz team, student council, tennis and cross country. He has received a number of academic awards and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is active in his church, serves as a tutor, and has volunteered for United Way, Dream Center and the Monroe Historical Society. William M. Woodward works in the electrical maintenance and control department at Middletown Works.

Steven Wright, son of Jonathan and Jodie Wright of Middletown, Ohio. Steven graduates from Middletown High School where he has been active in the show, a cappella and mixed choirs, Math and Spanish clubs, basketball, volleyball, cross country and Young Life. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society and received a number of academic awards. He has volunteered for All-American Weekend, volleyball coaching and as an elementary school tutor. Jonathan Wright works in the cold mill maintenance department at Middletown Works.
